Getting started
How to start, and when fees are agreed
Step 1
Send it or call
Describe the matter briefly through the form, attaching only the documents that matter, or call the office during business hours.
Step 2
Initial assessment
A lawyer reads the facts and documents you sent, then contacts you through the channel you chose to explain the possible routes.
Step 3
Agree the scope and fees
If you want us to go ahead, we set out the scope of work and the fees before starting. Any further work is put to you before it is done.
Sending a request and the initial assessment do not mean the matter has been taken on. Work starts only once the scope and fees are agreed.
Looking after your matter
How a matter is run and reported
The general course of a court matter — each stage adapts to the case and follows the scope agreed with you. You ask the lawyer responsible for progress directly.
- 01
Intake and facts
We hear the matter, collect the documents, and open a file in the case-management system.
- 02
Assessing the options
Limitation periods and evidence checked, relevant Supreme Court judgments looked up, and whether litigation suits the matter weighed up.
- 03
Options and cost
Negotiate, mediate, or litigate — the options explained, with the scope and fees in writing.
- 04
Conduct of the case
Filing or defence, witness hearings, and the outcome of hearings recorded in the file.
- 05
Enforcement and closing
Enforcement where it is within the agreed scope; documents returned and the work summarised for you.
Tax planning, advisory, contract and registration work runs differently — see each service page.

The office's systems
The office uses a case-management system and precedent and statute databases to help track hearing dates and documents, and to look up the law behind an assessment.
- Case management
- Hearing dates, documents and work notes kept together in the matter's file, so the lawyer answers your questions from the same record.
- Supreme Court precedent database
- We look up judgments relevant to your facts before setting the case strategy, so the assessment can point to actual rulings.
- Statute and regulation database
- We check the provisions, ministerial regulations and notifications in force on the date of the event.
